8079 aluminum foil is an 8xxx-series Al-Fe alloy with 0.7 – 1.3% iron and low silicon. The fine iron-rich particles refine the grain, so O-temper 8079 foil has higher tensile strength, elongation and puncture resistance than 1235 at the same thickness.
That extra toughness matters in demanding laminates: retort and stand-up pouches, aseptic cartons, cold-form (Alu-Alu) pharmaceutical blisters that are stretched into cavities, and aluminum-plastic film for lithium-ion pouch cells.

Cold-Form (Alu-Alu) Blister Foil
Cold-form blisters give almost total protection from moisture, oxygen and light, which is why they are chosen for moisture-sensitive drugs and hot, humid climates. The laminate is stretched into cavities at room temperature, so the foil must elongate without cracking.
- Typical structure: OPA 25 µm / aluminum 45 µm / PVC 60 µm
- Foil: 8079-O or 8021-O, 45 – 60 µm, low pinholes, Class A wettability
- Lidding: paired with 20 – 25 µm hard-temper lidding foil
Lithium Battery Pouch Film Foil
- Laminate: nylon or PET outer layer / adhesive / aluminum foil / adhesive / CPP sealant layer
- Foil: 8079-O or 8021-O, typically 35 – 40 µm
- Why 8xxx-O: high elongation for deep-drawing the cell cup, and puncture resistance to protect the cell
8079 vs 1235 vs 8021 Foil
| Property | 8079 | 1235 | 8021 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Alloy type | Al-Fe (0.7 – 1.3% Fe) | 1xxx, ≥ 99.35% Al | Al-Fe (1.2 – 1.7% Fe) |
| Strength / elongation | High | Base | Highest |
| Typical use | Retort pouches, aseptic, blister, battery | Standard laminates, tobacco | Cold-form blister, battery pouch |

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between 8079 and 1235 aluminum foil?
8079 contains 0.7 – 1.3% iron, which gives higher strength, elongation and puncture resistance than 1235 at the same thickness. Choose 8079 for retort pouches, cold-form blisters and battery pouch film; 1235 for standard laminates.
What thickness is Alu-Alu cold-form blister foil?
The aluminum layer is usually 45 µm, with 40, 47 and 60 µm also used, laminated as OPA 25 / Al 45 / PVC 60.
What foil is used in lithium battery pouch film?
Fully annealed 8079 or 8021 foil, typically 35 – 40 µm, laminated between a nylon or PET outer layer and a CPP sealant layer.
Why must blister and battery foil be O temper?
Full annealing gives maximum elongation for forming cavities and cell cups, and burns off rolling oil so the surface wets and bonds well to adhesives.
