1050 and 1060 aluminum foil are commercially pure 1xxx-series alloys containing at least 99.50% and 99.60% aluminum. Their low impurity content gives them the highest electrical and thermal conductivity of the common foil grades, together with excellent corrosion resistance and ductility.

Because they are soft and conductive rather than strong, 1050/1060 foils are specified for lithium battery cathode current collectors, cable and transformer foil, reflective insulation facing and heat-exchanger fins. For household and flexible packaging, 8011 and 1235 are usually the better choice.

Applications of 1050 / 1060 Aluminum Foil

  • Lithium battery cathode current collector: 1060-H18 at 12 – 20 µm, coated with cathode material
  • Cable foil and shielding tape: laminated with PET or copolymer for coaxial and data cable
  • Transformer and inductor windings: soft O-temper strip foil replacing copper
  • Reflective insulation: facing for fiberglass, bubble foil and duct wrap
  • Fin stock: air-conditioner and radiator fins where thermal conductivity matters most

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between 1050 and 1060 aluminum foil?

1060 has a slightly higher minimum aluminum content (99.60% vs 99.50%) and tighter limits on Fe, Mn and Mg, giving marginally higher conductivity. In practice the two are interchangeable for most foil uses; 1060 is more common in China and for battery foil.

Is 1060 aluminum foil used for lithium batteries?

Yes. 1060-H18 (and 1070 / 1235) is widely used as the cathode current collector in lithium-ion cells, typically 12 – 20 µm thick. Battery foil requires tight thickness tolerance, a clean surface and good wettability for coating.

Can 1050 / 1060 foil be used for household or food packaging?

It can, but 8011 and 1235 are the usual choice. 8011 is stronger for household rolls and containers, and 1235 rolls thinner with fewer pinholes for flexible packaging.

How do I calculate aluminum foil weight?

Weight (g/m²) = thickness (µm) × 2.71. For example, 20 µm 1060 foil weighs about 54.2 g/m², giving a yield of about 18.5 m² per kg.
