7075 aluminum is a high-strength heat-treatable alloy in the 7xxx Al-Zn-Mg-Cu series. T6 temper delivers tensile strength ≥540 MPa—higher than most steel alloys on a strength-to-weight basis—making 7075 the go-to aluminum for aerospace structures, precision tooling, high-performance bicycle frames, climbing equipment and sporting goods where weight and strength are critical.

Due to poor extrudability, 7075 is limited to simple cross-sections: round bars, rectangular bars, round tubes and thin-wall rectangular tubes. We supply 7075 extrusions in T6 (maximum strength) and T73/T7351 (stress-corrosion-resistant) tempers. Mill finish or anodized.

Key Characteristics

  • Highest Strength: T6 temper delivers tensile strength ≥540 MPa, the highest of commonly available aluminum alloys
  • Excellent Machinability: Machines cleanly with good surface finish; widely used for CNC-machined parts
  • Anodizable: Accepts Type II and hard anodizing (Type III) for wear resistance
  • Poor Weldability: Not suitable for fusion welding (hot cracking); use mechanical fasteners or adhesives
  • Stress-Corrosion Risk: T6 temper susceptible to stress-corrosion cracking in marine/humid environments; use T73/T76 tempers for SCC resistance
  • Limited Shapes: Poor extrudability restricts 7075 to simple cross-sections (bars, rods, simple tubes)

Applications

  • Aerospace: aircraft fittings, wing ribs, fuselage frames, landing gear parts
  • Tooling: jigs, fixtures, check gauges, mold components
  • Sporting goods: high-end bicycle frames, trekking poles, climbing carabiners, drone frames
  • Precision parts: CNC-machined components for motorsports, robotics, optics
  • Defense: small arms components, vehicle armor fittings

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is 7075 not available in complex extruded shapes?

7075 has poor extrudability due to its high alloying content (Zn, Mg, Cu) and narrow extrusion temperature window. It can only be extruded into simple solid shapes (bars, rods) and thin-wall tubes. For complex profiles, use 6061 or 6082.

Can 7075 aluminum be welded?

No. 7075 is highly susceptible to hot cracking during fusion welding and cannot be reliably welded using TIG, MIG or other arc processes. Join 7075 parts using mechanical fasteners (bolts, rivets) or structural adhesives.

What is the difference between 7075-T6 and 7075-T73?

T6: solution heat treated and artificially aged for maximum strength (≥540 MPa tensile). T73: over-aged to improve stress-corrosion cracking resistance and toughness, at the cost of ~15% lower strength. Use T73 for marine or corrosive environments; T6 for dry aerospace and tooling applications.

Is 7075 suitable for saltwater / marine use?

7075-T6 is susceptible to stress-corrosion cracking in marine environments. For saltwater or high-humidity use, specify T73 or T7351 tempers, which are over-aged for SCC resistance. Alternatively, use 6061-T6 or 5083 for marine applications.
